AKH
Foundation Supports Health and Wellness Activities
- Twenty
area residents participated in 12 weeks of
Urban Survival Self-Defense Classes
that were taught by Ted Cibik of Inner Strength at the Allegheny-Kiski
Health Foundation Charles & Mary Lou Young Non-Profit Center.
The classes were provided free of charge through a grant from
the Allegheny-Kiski Health Foundation.
- The Allegheny-Kiski
Health Foundation provided a grant to the
Alle-Kiski Medical Center Dialysis Clinic
for
the purchase of kidney
pillows and warming blankets to be used by the patient's while
receiving dialysis treatments.
- Local business owners
were trained by a certified Red Cross instructor on First
Aid, CPR and AED usage in the Winter of 2010.
The class was provided free of charge to the participants through
a grant underwritten by the Allegheny-Kiski Health Foundation.
- In
an effort to stem the recent increase in gang activity in the
Alle-Kiski Valley, the AKH Foundation provided a grant to Family
Services of Western PA to provide "Anti-Gang
Training" to area organizations.
- In the Spring of 2009,
the Allegheny-Kiski Health Foundation purchased the AutoVent
2000 for
Citizens Hose Ambulance Services. The AutoVent 2000 is the
latest technology in lightweight, transportable automatic ventilators.
- The Allegheny-Kiski
Health Foundation partnered with
Dr. Conrad D. Volz, Scientific Director, Center for Healthy Environments
and Communities to participate in a landmark study entitled the
"Stewardship Expedition of
the Allegheny River".
The goals of the expedition is to describe and document pollution
sources and to energize the community to become stewards of the
natural resources associated with the river. The study is
to begin in the Fall of 2007 and continue through the Spring of
2009.
- Local youth team coaches
were trained by a certified Red Cross instructor on First

a grant underwritten by the Allegheny-Kiski Health Foundation.
- In April 2006, The
Allegheny-Kiski Health Foundation sponsored a local man and his
wife, which made it possible for him, to participate in the"Joslin
Center in Boston's Gold Medal Diabetic Study".
The Joslin Center invited people, from all over the country, who
have had diabetes for over 50 years to participate in the study.
- State Representative,
John E. Pallone, in collaboration with
the Allegheny-Kiski Health Foundation, held a "Senior
Citizen's Fair". The fair was designed
to benefit persons age 55 and older with educational exhibits,
health screenings and printed health information for residents
of the 54th Legislative District.
- The
AKH Foundation provided a grant for
Uptown Pediatrics "Kid's Camp" Health Fair that
provided general child health information on nutrition, vaccine
information, obesity, asthma, etc.
- The
AKH Foundation sponsors participants from
the community and the hospital in the
American Cancer Society "Relay for Life", Habitat for Humanity
Ride, and Multiple
Sclerosis 150 Bike Tour.
- As
a co-sponsor for the "Family
Reading Night" series at Heights Elementary School
, the Foundation helped to promote family literacy throughout
the school community.
- The
AKH Foundation hosted informational
tables at the "Women & Children
First Family Fun Gala" sponsored by the Alle-Kiski
Hope Center, Strongland Chamber
of Commerce's Home Expo, and the Allegheny
Valley Showcase, sponsored by Allegheny
Valley Chamber of Commerce.
- The
Community Health Clinic in New
Kensington , was faced with the possibility of
closing due to lack of funds. The Foundation stepped in and
awarded two grants to help defray operational costs.
- Recently,
the AKH Foundation gave a grant
to Highlands Area
Meals on Wheels to help defray the cost of free
lunches for area residents.
- Many
other organizations benefit from the ongoing
support of the AKH Foundation. Some of these include: Strongland
and Allegheny Valley Chambers of
Commerce, New Kensington
Police Department, Allegheny
Valley YMCA, Ashley
Elder D.A.R.E. Fund, Adopt-a-School,
Alle-Kiski Hope Center,
Community
Library of Allegheny Valley, Lions
Club, Armstrong
Community Foundation, Highlands
Wellness Walk, AK
Valley Leadership Program and many more.
